This piece borrows four moments from four different and seemingly unrelated pieces. The four pieces are: Piano Sonata No. 2 by Pierre Boulez, Sicut Cervus by Giovanni Pierluigi da Palestrina, String Quartet Op. 28 by Anton Webern, and the Rite of Spring by Igor Stravinsky. The piece begins with original material interrupted by these four fragments. The piece was designed to have interruption become the defining characteristic of the piece, synthesizing seemingly unrelated music and tying the interrupted material together in a unified idea. The percussion, not in any of the borrowed music, acts as an outsider trying to participate in the synthesis, but always failing to fully integrate with the other elements. At the end, when everything has already finished, it continues alone, again interrupting the other musical ideas expected conclusion to the piece.
